Mark Poole - Ceramic Artist - Raku

Mark Poole is a ceramic artist who makes raku vases and stoneware (functional) pottery. Mark was born in South Korea, grew up in western Maryland, and now lives and works in Baltimore with his wife and two daughters. His work is influenced by Asian and America pottery traditions with motifs inspired by the beaches and woodlands of the mid-Atlantic region. Each piece is thrown on the potter’s wheel, and some are then altered by hand.

Raku is a Japanese ceramic method that dates to the 16th century. Pieces are removed from the kiln while hot, added to a metal container with dry materials and ignited. The particular mix of heat, smoke and glaze creates the color pattern.
